It relies on detecting player trails through chunk generation differences and world modifications, readable through mods like Xaero's Minimap with XaerosPlus. Old chunks from 1.12 look different from palette newchunks generated in 1.19+, and that contrast is what makes trails visible.
A geocache is anything left behind by another player that took effort or time to create. Base hunting is 99.95% boredom, 0.05% dopamine — but when you hit something, it's worth every block traveled.
